Moon Walk Training Diary Weeks 7 & 8

The last two weeks have been eventful and a learning curve for me in my training for the Moon Walk in May. We were up to 10 miles at week 6 which was great and we were aiming for an additional mile during week 7.

Using the same route which has been taking us through a country park and then down an old railway track, we had reached the point of increasing the distance or looping the same route.

I think it’s better and more motivating not to have to double back on anything so we took a turn at the end of the railway track and carried on. My training partner knew where we were going thankfully as I didn’t have a clue, but the tracks we were walking down were quite muddy with the weather.

All was going well until we reached a part that didn’t look like we would be able to cross it without sinking into the mud, and I was wearing my good trainers so I didn’t want to get them too dirty.

We decided to stick to the sides and stay close to the hedges which was fine until we met a big bramble bush! At the point of no return, the next few steps were a tricky maze of holding back the brambles and trying not to sink into the mud.

We both escaped unscathed, taking a few brambles with us, and my left foot got slightly damp as the water seeped through as I stayed in one place too long, but overall it worked out fine. I did draw the line when I saw the next track that had a tree down across the path and insisted we walked along the roads now.

The route meant we walked slightly more than the 11 miles we had intended and we ended up on 12.5 by the time we got back home. My feet were ready for the rest by this point and they didn’t quite recover for the rest of the day. A good tip from the Moon Walk twitter team suggested some padded socks so I was straight onto Amazon ordering myself some which I would try out the following week.

What I did enjoy about walking the 12.5 miles was that my Fitbit was recording 30,000 steps by the end of the day which was a great sight to see.

Todays week 8 target distance was 13.5 or 14 miles but we set off 15 minutes later than planned and I had Hubby cooking a roast dinner for 2pm so we were up against the distance increase today. We followed the same route and added on what we hoped would be another half a mile to increase the distance in the time frame we had available and I made it back in time for my roast dinner which was very welcome.

I am happy to report that the socks were the best £7 I could have spent. My feet still hurt today but not as bad so they were a good purchase. The weather has been very kind to us on Sundays so far and today wasn’t coat weather at all.

I’m hopeful that it’s going to be hoodie weather very shortly, but I have learnt that I need to drink now when we’re out and about and I have also needed a snack for the last couple of weeks. Today there wasn’t anything in the cupboards before I went and I took crisps which isn’t the best choice but last week I took mixed nuts which was a great idea.

The plan for the next couple of weeks is to increase the mileage to around 15 miles which I think is very doable. I am really enjoy the walking and looking forward to the main event now.
