When staying in Cornwall at Charteroak Lodges, we were looking for our nearest National Trust locations in Cornwall to visit. Lanhydrock National Trust popped up on the map at just ten miles away.
We decided on an afternoon visit after spending the morning on the beach. I love a National trust property when we’re on holiday or out of our usual area as there are so many amazing places to visit across the country with plenty of history.
Getting To Lanhydrock National Trust
You’ll find Lanhydrock in the Bodmin area of Cornwall, PL30 4AB. The main car park was easy to find with a sat nav, and is very large . When you arrive in the car park, it’s worth noting that it’s quite a long walk to the house down the main driveway.
I can only imagine how rich the Robartes family were in the 1600’s. Richard Robartes was known as the “wealthiest in the west”.
The visitors area is also located near the car park and away from the main estate. It’s a lovely walk. There are accessible buggy runs that travel between the main estate and the reception area.
History Of Lanhydrock National Trust
The mansion house and estate at Lanhydrock has a very vibrant history dating back to the 1700’s. One of the most dramatic historical events at Lanhydrock was a fire in 1881.
Over many years prior to the fire, the house was derelict and brought back to life by various owners and heirs.
After the fire, the last heir Thomas Charles returned the house to the standard it was in prior to the fire. He sadly lost his life in battle during World War I and after this the family never recovered.
Things To Do At Lanhydrock National Trust
There is so much to see and do at Lanhydrock, and we could have easily spent a lot longer during our visit. Your visit offers the formal gardens, 1,000 acres of parkland and woodland as well as touring the impressive mansion.
There are two places to eat including the courtyard care and the Park cafe nearer the car park.
if you choose to take bikes with you to Lanhydrock, you can explore for miles on the woodland track. Whilst Lanhydrock is a dog friendly day out in Cornwall, it’s worth noting that dogs are permitted in the woodland areas and courtyard cafe.
There’s plenty of places to walk your dog at Lanhydrock, and we found it really easy to take it in turns to visit the house and keep the dog entertained too.
Fun Facts About Lanhydrock House And Gardens
The National Trust has owned and managed Lanhydrock since 1953. The house and gardens were also used at the main setting for the 1996 version of Twelfth Night starring Helena Bonham Carter.
