Bluebell woods are all over the UK, you just have to know where to look. There’s bound to be one near you. Over half of the World’s population of bluebells are actually in the UK. When is bluebell season in the UK? Bluebell season is between mid April through until late May, when you will be treated to a carpet of blue and purple.

As the bluebells are perennial, you’ll find them in the same place year after year when they pop up again. Finding beautiful bluebells in woods is a popular family activity during the Springtime. It’s a great excuse for a pretty walk in the UK’s woodlands.

Did you know it can take 5 years for a bluebell to grow from a seed. They are a delicate flower when grown, so if you are out searching for bluebells, take care not to trample through them, as they can be easily damaged.

Do you know the different between Spanish and English bluebells? The English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) is a deep violet-blue, with tiny bell-shaped flowers that hang from the side. The Spanish bluebells are very similar but their flowers hang around the stem, which grows straight upright.

Combermere Abbey Bluebells

Whitchurch SY13 4AJ

If you’re wondering where to see bluebells in Cheshire, then a visit to Combermere Abbey is a must. For five weeks between in April and May, on a Saturday and Sunday, you can book a morning or afternoon walk to see the bluebells.

The walk is around 2 miles in distance and take around an hour to complete. Dogs on leads are welcome, but the terrain isn’t suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Dunham Massey Bluebells

The best place to spot the bluebells at Dunham Massey is along the camellia walk towards the bluebell meadow. There are hundreds and hundreds of bluebells to stop and admire. Perhaps the largest display can be found under the oaks and witch hazels next to the Bog Garden.

The bluebell walks at Rode Hall begins at the end of April. The 10 acre woodland gardens will be covered in bluebells during the Spring months. The tea room will also be open during your visit for refreshments.

At the beginning of May you can join a guided bluebell walk around Morley Hayes woods starting at 10.30am.

Following the walk you will enjoy chicken and leek pie, creamed potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. Or mushroom pie, creamed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. This is served with a glass of house wine, and freshly made tea or coffee for the grown ups.

One of the most popular places to spot bluebells in Dorset is at Pamphill near Wimborne. There is a dedicated bluebell woods path through the woodland to protect the flowers during the Spring.

Also known as Abbott Street Copse, close to the Kingston Lacy estate, the new plantation was created in 2019 to protect the bluebells for many more years to come.

Holyford Woods Bluebell Walks

Enjoy a stroll through the ancient woodlands and marvel at the beautiful blooms carpeting the forest floor. Please keep to the footpaths to avoid trampling the flowers.

The Castle will be open to explore as well as the cafe serving light refreshments. Picnics welcome. Dogs permitted but must be kept on a lead at all times.

If you visit Roydon Woods in the Spring, you’ll find a big carpet of bluebells amongst the beech trees. There are plenty of trails and paths to discover in the woods during your visit.

It’s worth noting that there isn’t any parking on site. The access points into the woods are next to the Filly Inn on the A337, or the bridleway behind Boldre Church Roundhill campsite.

During the Spring months at Exbury Gardens in the New Forest, you’ll spot plenty of bluebells on Azalea Drive. There’s plenty to see and do on a day out to Exbury Gardens, as well as enjoying all the seasonal flowers.

A great opportunity to see bluebells in Kent. As well as enjoying the wander through the bluebell woods, see the special event bluebell-inspired craft fair. The Garden Room will be transformed into an emporium of handmade artworks and wonderful treats.

Riverhill Gardens is also home to some great outdoor cinema events through the year.

Emmetts Garden

The woodland at Emmetts Garden are filled with bluebells in the Spring. This National Trust location in Kent also has a rose garden, outdoor play area for children and welcome dogs.

Walmer Castle Queen Mother’s Gardens

If you’re visiting Walmer Castle in the Spring, the Queen Mother’s Gardens will have a lovely display of bluebells.

During your visit you can also visit the castle. Entry is FREE to English Heritage members. Throughout the year there are also seasonal events including Easter.

There is a car park and toilets available if you’re visiting.

The gardens are open on the last Sunday in April and the first Sunday in May between 2-5.30pm. The entrance fee is via cash only on the gate when you arrive. Dogs are welcome on a lead and there are also refreshment available.

You’ll discover bluebells at this ancient Anglo Saxon royal burial site in Suffolk. Owned by the National Trust, you’ll spot plenty of non Spanish native bluebells hidden in the woods.
