A few weeks ago, I was checking out some dog friendly places to stay in Somerset and came across a good price for Bucklegrove Holiday Park in Cheddar, Somerset.
The price was too good to pass up considering it was bank holiday weekend, so I quickly booked and we were allocated a Superior pet friendly caravan.

Getting To Bucklegrove Holiday Park
We are around an hour and a half drive away from Cheddar in Somerset, so set off on our weekend away in Somerset during the morning, knowing we would take a leisurely drive and stop off along the way in a dog friendly area, which turned out to be Nunney Castle, part of the English Heritage.
As we reached the areas of Cheddar, nearing Bucklegrove, the roads started to narrow quite drastically. We were deep in the Mendip Hills and putting absolute trust into our satnav, we found Bucklegrove without too much trouble.

Accommodation At Bucklegrove Holiday Park
Bucklegrove Holiday Park started as tea rooms in the 1940’s and has since grown to become one of the largest holiday parks in Somerset. Accommodation options are caravans, camping pitches, lodges, camping pods and touring pitches.
As we walked around the site, we saw plenty of space for camping, and there were a few lodges and camping pods dotted around.
Pet Friendly Caravan
I am always wary of staying in a pet friendly caravan after our cleanliness issue at Doniford Bay, however I wouldn’t have been able to tell that dogs had been in our caravan before us which was great.
When we first arrived we had encountered a slight issue. We were given the keys to our van but found that the cleaning hadn’t been finished. It turned out to be a miscommunication between the staff and was rectified quickly. We were compensated for our inconvenience with a drink from the bar.
Our pet friendly caravan consisted of two bedrooms, lounge, kitchen and bathroom. Everything you would expect from a caravan. The furnishings and layout were nicer than the basic caravan we had stayed in at Doniford Bay, but we were without a balcony or hot tub. Sadly these were all sold out when we booked.
Facilities At Bucklegrove Holiday Park
Bucklegrove isn’t a huge site, but it’s not small either. We were able to walk around quite easily, which was handy when having Lola with us.
On site there is a small reception and shop which sold the basics, but we quickly learned that it closed quite early so it wasn’t always very convenient.

Also onsite is a laundry area, plenty of toilet and shower blocks for campers which we saw being used regularly.
I like to make sure there is onsite food and drink available when we book somewhere to stay, or at least be able to access takeaways and shops in the local area. The Lodge bar and grill at Bucklegrove Holiday Park is new for 2019, and we had some lovely meals during our stay.
The Lodge is open during the evenings from 5pm only, and in off season only at the weekends.
The inside of the Lodge is a decent sized space, which is dog friendly on evenings when there is no entertainment. On our first night we had great weather so we sat outside on the picnic benches with Lola. The area was next to a small play area and at peak dinner time, there weren’t any free tables.
On our second evening, it was raining, so we sat inside. We parked ourselves in a corner and Lola was well behaved and laid on the floor waiting for any food scraps to fall.
The meals in the Lodge were reasonably priced with good choice and large portions. Between us we enjoyed Scampi, Burger, Thai chicken curry and a steak meal. There was a slight hiccup with being charged for our meals, but again this was rectified quickly.

We soon learned that Bucklegrove Holiday Park is owned by the Wookey Hole Resort and we were spotting staff members at the holiday park. To start with we weren’t sure who was staff and who wasn’t as there didn’t seem to be any consistency in uniform choices.
Also on site is a small swimming pool area which is open between 9am – 6pm daily, and a pool table area. There is plenty of outside space for children to run around thought, that is a great holiday park to be able to get away from it all.

One little treat we found was there was free WIFI across the whole park. We were expecting it to only work in the Lodge area, however it would work in the caravan as well. The signal strength was quite poor in the evenings when the majority of the guests were trying to use it, but it worked for us most of the time.

Places To Visit Near Bucklegrove Holiday Park
Being based in Cheddar, Somerset, Bucklegrove has Wookey Hole ten minutes in one direction and Cheddar Gorge ten minutes in the other direction.
We spotted a retail park around a fifteen minute drive away which was home to a Waitrose for those last minute essentials. To get here, you drive into the City of Wells which is a place I wish we had more time to visit.
There are some amazing views in the Mendip Hills area of Somerset, and there looked to be amazing places to walk and enjoy the view.
Our Experience
We had a lovely time at Bucklegrove. A short stay was enough for us, mainly due to staying in a caravan with the dog. We prefer to have more space around us, but it was lovely to get away from it all for a couple of nights.
Our stay wasn’t without a few minor issues, but each one was dealt with quickly and we really couldn’t fault the dedication of the staff.
