Steam train enthusiasts will be pleased to find all the steam railways in Devon. There are plenty to choose from, including two which offer the great Polar Express train experiences each year.
Steam train timetables are subjective to change, and may not run all year round. It’s a good idea to keep your eye on the websites for all the latest changes to any timetables.
South Devon Railway
Buckfastleigh, TQ11 0DZ
This 14 mile round trip steam train journey offers stunning views of the amazing Devon countryside. The train runs from Buckfast station, Staverton station and Totnes Riverside.
The majority of people board the train at Buckfast station where you’ll find free parking and easy wheelchair access. There’s also a gift shop here, toilets and refreshments.
Before you board the train, you can also enjoy the children’s playground and riverside walk along the river Dart.
If you choose to board the train at Staverton station, you’ll find limited free parking, toilets and a pretty riverside walk.
Through the year there is a packed calendar of events at South Devon Railway, These include Sunday lunch on the train and afternoon tea train experiences. During the Christmas period, the South Devon Railway is home to the popular Polar Express, an event not to be missed.
Whilst you’re visiting, you may also want to visit the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm. It’s located next to the railway. You can enjoy the interactive bird displays, holding the Guinea Pigs and much more.
Dartmouth Steam Railway

What was once known as the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is now the Dartmouth Steam Railway. This is the only attraction in Devon that lets you enjoy the delights of Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Dartmouth and the River Dart, Kingswear and Totnes on your day out.
As well as a journey on the steam train, you can also book a steam and cruise ticket. This includes a ferry across the river Dart and a circular cruise.
During the Christmas season, the Dartmouth Steam Railway is host to the UK’s first steam train of lights. It’s a popular festive experience which often sells out quickly.
Facilities at the station include toilets, a gift shop and a cafe for refreshments. Dogs are permitted on the steam trains with an additional small fee.
There are no parking facilities at any of the stations along the Dartmouth Steam Railway stations, however the website offers good solutions for parking nearby.
Devon Railway Centre
Bickleigh, Tiverton EX16 8RG
A fun day out in Devon for the whole family is a visit to the Devon Railway Centre and Model Village. The admission ticket includes unlimited train rides, model village, crazy golf, indoor and outdoor play areas and a model funfair. Dogs are also welcome on a lead if you’re looking for dog friendly days out in Devon.
The steam trains are named Rebecca, Ivor and Horatio. As they take you on your train journey next to the river Exe you’ll be treated to a knowledgeable narrative of the history whilst you enjoy the scenery.
Plym Valley Railway
Coypool Rd, Plymouth PL7 4NW
The Plym Valley Railway runs between Marsh Mills and Plym Bridge. Steam trains don’t run all year round, but the website has a good calendar showcasing which trains are running when. There are also special events throughout the year which include spooky trains at Halloween and The Christmas Express through December.
Lynton And Barnstaple Railway

The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway is a narrow-gauge railway adventure in North Devon. The train boards at Woody Bay station and takes a two mile round trip to Killington Lane and back. Purchasing a ticket includes travel all day so you can ride as many times as you like.
Through the year there are often good deals to be found such as kids travel free with a paying adult. At Christmas you’ll also find the Christmas trains running.
