Check Your Car Insurance

While every driver needs car insurance, it’s important to make sure yours is valid and up-to-date before heading off on a long trip.

If it’s been a while since you looked at your policy, you might find that it doesn’t offer the level of protection that you’d like. For example, if you took out insurance as a new driver and only got third-party cover, you may now be ready for comprehensive protection if you’ve increased your earnings and are more financially stable.

Take a few hours out of your day to use a car insurance comparison service and find out whether your existing policy is the right one for your needs.

Perform Routine Maintenance

Even small problems with your car can turn into big issues when on a long road trip, so it’s important to check everything out before heading off. Make sure you look at things like your breaks, battery, tyres and lights.

If it’s been a while since your car has been serviced, it might be worth getting a professional to conduct these checks, especially if you’re not sure what to look for.

Plan Your Route

If you have a set destination in mind for your road trip, it’s worth finding out what the best way to get there will be. Don’t just rely on your GPS, do some research and figure out the best route as well as alternate routes in case there’s a lot of traffic on the day you’re setting off.

You may also want to take a scenic route depending on where you’re driving to, or have little stops off along the way. Failing to think about your route might mean you miss some beautiful sights or it will take you a really long time to get to your destination.

Pack Carefully

It can be tempting to pack your car full of everything you own for a road trip, but you probably don’t need that much clutter. Pack a sensible amount of things that you know you’ll need to avoid passengers becoming uncomfortable due to all the bags at their feet.

You also don’t want to pack your boot so much that you can’t see out. If you do need to bring a lot of stuff, for a camping trip for instance, try to pack strategically and use storage solutions like packing cubes to make the most of your space.

Once you have all the boring parts out of the way, you can start thinking about your packed lunch, the music you want to listen to and any games you’re all going to play – a road trip should be fun, after all!
