How To Make A Scratch Art CD Decoration

How to make a scratch art cd decoration

We have always got random promotional CD’s laying around the house that I keep meaning to either throw away or find a good use for. During the school holidays, Miss A and I decided to make her a scratch art CD decoration for her room.

I couldn’t quite believe how quick this activity was, and it was really easy at the same time.

You will need:-

  • CD
  • Acrylic paint
  • screwdriver / cocktail stick

Start by painting a thin layer of acrylic paint on the shiny side of the CD. You will need to leave it to dry for a few hours until it’s dry to the touch. Depending on what design you want to add to your CD, freehand draw with a pencil, or use a stencil. Miss A decided she wanted hearts which was easy enough.

I couldn’t find a cocktail stick to scratch with, so I opted for a screw driver which worked just as well. Some of my lines were a little jagged so I went over them again to smooth them over.

When the CD catches the light, it gives off a lovely rainbow colouring. We popped this one on her bedroom wall with blue tac. We decided they could be hung from the ceiling like a mobile but it depends what you have on the reverse of your CD.

  1. What a fun simple idea – must try it as we have a stack of random, odd cd’s! Perhaps you could glue the backs together of 2 Cd’s for a mobile so you have pretty effects on both sides?

  2. A great idea! We have a huge box of old CD’s hanging around – will have to dig them out!

    • I don’t see why not, should be quite easy, and as Fiona mentioned in a comment you could stick two together to make them double sided
