Walking Equipment For Beginners

Do you enjoy walking but never sure what to wear to stay comfortable? I’ve collated some of the best walking equipment for beginners from my years of walking experience.

From gentle strolls around the forest, to climbing across the Jurassic Coast, or perhaps visiting the Peak District for walking. There are plenty of reasons to spend more time outdoors, however it’s essential to go prepared.

Over time I have learned and discovered that some walking equipment is necessary and others really aren’t worth wasting the money on.

Water Rucksack Bag

Staying hydrated when walking is essential for your body. To prevent having to carry around a water bottle, or a large rucksack, a water rucksack bag is a great idea.

The Monvecle Pack Water Rucksack Bag is 19 x 10 x 2 inches in size which includes a 2L water bladder compartment which enables you to have hands free drinking as you’re walking along.

Made from a high quality nylon fabric, the rucksack is waterproof keeping your belongings dry in light rain. There is also additional storage in the bag to store items such as a phone, spare clothes and purse.

Walking Boots

Proper walking boots are a must if you’re walking for longer distances or more frequently. Your feet will be put through their paces quite literally as you walk and your feet will thank you for decent footwear.

Good walking boots will be breathable, waterproof, and have cushioning to protect your feet as you walk.

Walking Socks

Keep your feet cool and dry with walking socks made for purpose. Walking socks should have additional cushioning in the heel and ball area of the foot to help prevent blisters and sore feet.

The Seoulstory7 multi pack hiking socks are a mix of cotton, spandex and polyester which are ideal for walking and hiking.

Walking Poles

FitLife walking poles are anti shock with a quick lock system. If you are planning on walking up or down any hills or inclies, or even over uneven terrain, walking poles are a godsend.

They are collapsible for easy storage when not in use and have foam handles for comfortable use. When walking with poles for a long period of time, you will be grateful for comfortable handles to prevent sores on the thumbs.

Long Sleeve Base Layer Top

Being able to regulate your temperature when walking is essential. Weather is very changeable and you can dress for one season and experience more than one when out and about.

Wearing a long sleeve base layer helps to provide an extra layer without adding too much weight to your outfit. The Mountain Warehouse Merino thermal base layer is made from a high quality wool with natural antibacterial properties helping you stay fresh and odour free for longer.

The base layer top helps keep the moisture away from the skin, is breathable and lightweight, everything you need to help you stay dry and comfortable when walking.

First Aid Kit

If your walks take you off road and through forests, it’s a good idea to be prepared with a travel first aid kit. Small enough to fit in your walking rucksack, but containing the essential items in case you need some first aid along the way.

Blister plasters are an additional good idea to include in your first aid kit, especially if your feet aren’t used to your walking boots or the distance you are walking.

Waterproof Jacket

A lightweight, fold away waterproof jacket is a great idea to carry with you when walking. If you’re wearing your jacket and the weather heats up, a fold away jacket can be stored easily away.

The Mountain Warehouse Pakka Women’s Rain Proof jacket is waterproof up to 1500mm of rain within a 24 hour period. With a breathable fabric, you shouldn’t feel as though the jacket is sticking to you as you walk. This jacket also has reflective piping giving you added visibility in poor conditions.

Comfortable Trousers

Comfortable trousers for walking are an essential part of your walking equipment. You may decide to opt for waterproof trousers, but personally from experience I find them quite uncomfortable which is why I recommend wearing exercise leggings.

Exercise leggings made of polyester and elastane are stretchy and don’t rub. They don’t make you sweat when you’re walking further distances, and they dry quickly if you get stuck in a rain shower.

This walking essentials list is designed for beginners looking to walk those longer distances, or to be prepared when out and about.
