I should have known when I married my husband that no DIY would ever get done in our house unless we paid someone to do it! He’s quite open that he hates DIY and it isn’t something he feels comfortable doing. Even with a paint brush in his hand, the edges end up looking tatty and like a five year old may have attempted the job. Often now I don’t let him near the paint tin and put the job by for when I know I am able to complete it.
There is such a big list of jobs that need doing around the house, but none of them get done because it usually means a row before anything gets started. He did buy a new multi purpose tool last year which I have to admit he uses every chance he gets. This is usually to dismantle things such as the decking we removed from the garden last Summer. I don’t struggle getting those types of jobs done.
The funniest that ever happened was when Miss A was small and Hubby was in the loft getting something out. I’m pretty sure reading this you know what I’m going to say next! Yep his foot and ankle appeared through the ceiling where he missed the beam. I wouldn’t have minded that but the DIY that was required to fix the hole was another story. I still think it needs doing properly many years later as the plaster looks very out of place against the professional workmanship that was there to start with.
A lot of people really enjoy DIY. I envy the people who are able to turn their hand to any job and save hundreds by doing it all themselves. My personal skills are limited, but I am quite good with a paint brush, yet it’s not something I enjoy. Reading about different DIY jobs around the home has made me realise that some jobs aren’t as simple as they would first appear. I have been quite shocked to read about some of the dangers that DIY brings including working in older properties where asbestos may be present. I know all about the roofs in older properties, however I didn’t realise the risks were in everyday DIY projects such as up cycling furniture that is made of MDF. The resin that it’s made with can contain harmful substances. I can’t imagine having to claim for mesothelioma compensation if I were to ever suffer from asbestos poisoning.
