Dorothy Koomson is one of my favourite authors, and I have read many of her books over the years. The Rose Petal Beach is a book I remember attempting to read a couple of years ago and then abandoning it. It’s been sitting on my Kindle waiting patiently for some months now, so I decided to give it another go.
I remember the first time around I gave up after a couple of chapters as I found the skipping between the past and present difficult to keep up with as the characters changed, however I persevered this time and I am very glad I did.
Tamia Challey is horrified when her husband Scott is arrested for sexual assault. She is convinced it was a horrible mistake and is determined to clear her husband’s name. This may be simple enough but when the accuser turns out to be one of her closest friends, and her husband admits to having an affair with her, Tamia’s life starts to unfold in front of her.
I wasn’t sure how Tamia as a person would actually be able to cope with everything that is thrown at her through the book, and there were certain snippets that actually seemed a little far fetched. However the general story line is very solid, and flows nicely once you understand that you are going to be dipping in and out of the character’s past and present.
I will admit to being hooked from Chapter Two, and I didn’t guess the ending which was a huge surprise to me until it actually happened. I thought I may have a clue as to how it might have ended but I was so far off the mark that I was surprised. A good twist like this makes me appreciate a great author, and I really think Koomson has written this really well.
The book doesn’t just follow the storyline of Scott being arrested, and whilst that is the core of the book, the story line progresses very quickly taking Scott away as the central character for a little while, despite knowing he still has a focal role in the book.
If you’ve read Dorothy Koomson books before then I highly recommend you reading The Rose Petal Beach, and if you haven’t come across her as an author, then I highly recommend you seeking her out.
