I can often think that Hubby doesn’t have a lot of attention to detail, but he surprised me the other night when he came home from work, as he opened the back door to the garden to let Lola in and noticed our garden umbrella wasn’t where he put it the day before on the table.
I laughed him off when he said he couldn’t find it anywhere in the garden and that he had definitely put it up over the table the day before. No-one was going to come into the garden to steal a garden umbrella though were they! Definitely not one that is years old and doesn’t even look that nice. Also the fact that all the other garden furniture and toys were still there, it didn’t make sense!
I think Hubby was more bemused by the missing umbrella than I was, but he agreed to wait until the morning to have a look properly in the garden. Now our garden isn’t that big and he really could see everything from the back door, so I wasn’t sure why he thought anything would be different in the morning, but I left him to it.
I’ll admit the thought of a missing item from the garden got me thinking that evening about thefts, and how or why anyone would have come into the garden when we weren’t at home. There didn’t appear to be any damage and the back gate was locked as it always is, so I was thinking that someone would have had to climb over the fence to get in and then surely would have been spotted as we’re quite well surrounded.
The thoughts left me a little uneasy, despite knowing that our home insurance is fully up to date, and that all our garden tools and equipment is kept locked away, I still wondered if there was anything else we should be doing to protect our belongings from theft. In this instance it may only be a garden umbrella that’s easily replaceable and not expensive, but another time we might not be so lucky.
The next morning, I took a look out of the bedroom window to try and get a different perspective on the garden. The umbrella definitely wasn’t there, but when I looked out of the corner of my eye, I spotted it folded up in our neighbour’s garden next to they patio table! I still haven’t managed to ask them why they have our garden umbrella but as we get on with our neighbours very well, we have had a chuckle as to why or how the umbrella went on its own adventures to the next door garden.
