If you’re reading this then you must be thinking about starting a blog. Well done! Blogging has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done, you won’t regret it, but I hope I can help you save money starting a blog as there is so much choice it can be overwhelming.
Which Blogging Platform To Choose?
When you’re thinking of starting a blog, the two most platforms in the blogging market are Blogger and WordPress. You can have a free version on both platforms, and your URL will end in dot wordpress or dot blogger. It’s worth thinking about purchasing your own domain name and purchasing hosting right in the beginning as it’ll make things easier in the long run.
I have had blogs on both platforms in the past. In fact The Life Of Spicers originally started out on the free Blogger platform until I merged it across to WordPress. Personally I think WordPress has more scope for customisation and I would recommend starting out on WordPress.
Save Money On Hosting
If you want your blog to have your own domain name such as thelifeofspicers.com then you will need to purchase your domain and web hosting when blogging on WordPress. There is a lot of choice out there, and I hope I can help save you some money by providing you with a 10% code with TSOHost, the hosting company I’m with. I only ever recommend a service if I have a good experience, and TSOHost have been very reliable and they are cheap too. Hosting starts from £2.99 per month and with my 10% off code you can save even more.
Often you can get a good deal on your choice of domain name at the same time, so it’s worth checking out to see if you can save even more.
Making It Pretty
Once you have your blogging platform all set up, you will want to make your blog look pretty. There are plenty of free themes available and I advise you to use these first before purchasing a theme. If you do decide to purchase a theme then there is a great selection on Etsy.
A WordPress blog is very adaptable and customisable with plugins. They are there to make your life easier and don’t require you to have a lot of html knowledge which is great. Plugins will often have a free and a paid version so do check out reviews and research what you actually need, as more often than not the free version is perfectly acceptable for what you need.
You are ready to start blogging. Enjoy and have fun. Blogging is a great hobby, one I can’t ever imagine not doing now.
