I was awake by 5am this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep. Miss A and Hubby were still snoring so after laying there until 7am, I decided to get up and have a look around the resort. We have a different perspective staying in the Jamaica section this time rather than Martinique when we last stayed here, so I wanted to see how close everything was.
The sun was rising, making for some amazing photos across the lake as I walked around. Jamaica is actually in a great spot to get to Old Port Royale. Our block 46 is next to the bridge that takes you past the playground and across to Old Port Royale. It’s almost quicker than the walk was from Martinique building 22. I am happy with that!
After filling my cup in OPR with coffee I made my way back to the room to find everyone awake now. A quick shower and we went for our first breakfast. I love the Bounty Platter, an American take on a cooked breakfast here, but I can’t eat it every day as it’s loaded with carbs having potato wedges, eggy bread and a scone. The first day it’s lovely to revisit those tastes though.
Animal Kingdom is our first park this visit. I had booked Fastpasses for Kilimanjaro Safari, Expedition Everest and Kali River Rapids. Everest was going to be first so I didn’t have to think about it too long. I am such a wimp when it comes to rides, but I have looked at plenty on Youtube to make sure I would be happy to go on it before we travelled.
The queues to get through bag security were huge when we arrived. I thought we had missed American Spring Break, but it seemed people were still around. Today being Wednesday, I hoped things would calm down by the weekend.
Once we were in, we headed through to Expedition Everest. I was quite excited to go on it, and even when we were climbing the big mountain I hadn’t really considered the fact we would have to get back down the mountain at some point during the ride. We were seated at the back which always makes things feel faster, but for the most part, it was OK.
I didn’t mind the going backwards in the dark, or even the speed, it was just the split second when I realised we were at the top of the mountain about to go down at great speed and bank at the bottom to go round the corner. I’m not sure if I left my stomach on that mountain or not to be honest, but I was a little bit shaky when I got off.
Miss A has never been afraid to try any ride, but she turned into a little bit of a drama princess as I mentioned I was a little scared and announced that she had been scared too. The photopass photo tells a different story!
We had a little time to explore Asia and Africa before it was time for Kali River Rapids. The sun was really hot today so the water ride was going to be a welcome relief. It was amazing how familiar the park felt despite visiting almost two years ago. It helped second time around to be able to remember where things were a little easier.
Lunch time was a reservation in Tusker House, a buffet themed restaurant to meet Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Mickey. This was great and I have talked about lunch in more detail in a separate blog post. I would return again it was that nice.
Onto Kilimanjaro Safari after lunch. I had tried to get a morning fast pass for the safari but I didn’t manage it, still it was a nice gentle ride after a big meal. I felt there were less animals out this time compared to last time, but I think it was definitely hotter this time around.
I had been planning a quick exit after the Safari so we could go back to the resort and swim, but things always seem to take longer in Disney for some reason. Miss A had acquired her new lanyard and a couple of pins to get her started on pin trading this time around on our way out and by the time we got back to the resort, it was almost 4pm. The swimming pool in Jamaica village was a welcome relief on my tired feet and hot body.
Miss A spent the previous holiday with a swim vest on just for peace of mind, however this time around there was no stopping her. The pool was on a slow gradient between one meter and one meter sixty before the deep end ropes signalled a bigger drop.
She had a large area to be able to walk in before going out of her depth. I think I preferred the Martinique pool in terms of layout and space to Jamaica, however there was plenty of sunbeams available and space to swim so there was nothing to complain about.
Hubby wanted to go and watch the new Star Wars fireworks at Hollywood Studios so I said I would go with him and leave Miss A with Granny to watch the movie under the stars at the resort. This worked out well as Hubby and I got to spend an evening together and we shared a large turkey leg before sitting in front of the Chinese theatre on the floor watching the Symphony in the Stars which was amazing as so worth watching.
The rush for the busses is always a fun one after fireworks end, but we managed to get on the first bus which was great. We were home before the movie had finished, ready for bed to be up early to see the Magic Kingdom welcome show in the morning.
