Do you remember when you were a child, putting crisp packets in the oven to shrink them and turn them into keyrings? No? Maybe that was just me.
Times have moved on, and now you can buy an actual product safely designed to shrink and create different items such as keyrings, rings, necklaces, brooches, dog tags and more.
Miss A loves anything princess themed, so the other day when it was chucking it down with rain, we spent time colouring in our princess pictures to see what we could create with them.
There are guided lines to cut around, as you are advised not to cut on the edge of what you have just coloured in.
Once you have your cut out shapes ready for the oven, they need to be placed on silver foil on a baking sheet. The oven needs to be at around 280 degrees celcius, but they wont take long to shrink down to seven times smaller than the original size.
When the shrinkles are reducing in size they will curl up and then go flat. Once they have gone flat they are done, so you need to keep your eye on them whilst they’re “cooking”.
It’s worth noting that if you want to turn these shapes into anything that requires a hole to be looped onto anything, do it BEFORE it goes into the oven. The instructions do tell you this, but I didn’t make some of mine big enough as obviously the hole shrinks too! It’s advised to use something like a hole punch. This does make it tricky on some of the smaller shapes, so you have to think about which might be suitable for which item you want to create.
See just how small they shrink. Before and after!
Miss A is very happy when she is accessorising herself. It’s one of her favourite things to do along side art and craft so this kind of set is great to keep her occupied.
I thought this set as really fun and it has the opportunity to keep children entertained for a long time, and over more than one session. It’s easy to put the set away and just heat a few things at a time.
My only criticism as a parent is the size of some of the images makes it difficult to get a decent sized hole to create something like a necklace without breaking the smaller image after shrinking. The design may be better if there were pre cut holes, or perhaps a tray designed to hold the shrinkles in the oven whilst having a cocktail stick in place to keep the hole secure through the shrinking process.
