Smoothies are a great way of getting goodness into your diet without trying too hard and since buying my Breville Blend Active blender a few weeks before Christmas, I have been making a smoothie for my breakfast every day. You may have spotted some of my concoctions on Instagram if you follow me over there. Some days I have taken a chance on what the smoothie may end up like and some of them I haven’t enjoyed as much as others, but I have had some successes so here are some easy smoothie recipe ideas.
I wasn’t prepared when the blender arrived so I was making do with ingredients I had in the fridge and fruit bowl. You’ll notice that banana doesn’t feature in my smoothie recipes because I don’t like them. I did add banana into my first ever smoothie and I tolerated it, but I decided that I prefer the taste without so have stayed away since. The beauty of making smoothies however is that you can literally add anything you like into the blender and fingers crossed you’ll end up with something you enjoy drinking that’s good for you.
Who knew beetroot would taste so good in a smoothie? I didn’t until I tried it. I enjoy beetroot and often buy it to go with salads for lunches, but I am the only one in the house that eats it so I have to make sure I don’t let half the packet go to waste before it’s all eaten. I had some left when my blender arrived so one of my first concoctions was beetroot, oranges and spinach.
For this smoothie, I used three clementine oranges, a handful of spinach and one large beetroot. Topped with water, this smoothie resulted in a strong beetroot flavour that was easy to drink.
After going to the supermarket and stocking up on fresh fruit, I realised this could be quite expensive after a time so I looked around for alternatives and spotted bags and pots of frozen fruits for around £2. I only use a handful in each smoothie so this will be a cost effective way of making smoothies every day. My next experiment was with blackberries, cherries, apple, pear and spinach.
The blackberries and cherries were from a frozen mix I bought and the rest of the ingredients fresh, one pear, one apple, a handful of spinach and topped up with frozen berries with some water.
I found when adding an apple to a blender, the smoothie comes out a lot thicker so more water is required. I learnt quickly not to overfill the blender so I could enjoy additional water to thin down the smoothie if needed. This smoothie was quite tart from the berries but very nice.
We had half a tin of pineapple that needed using so this was the basis of my next smoothie recipe. Mixed with oranges, pear and spinach this smoothie turned out a very strange green colour. It’s important not to let the colour put you off drinking as the taste is so different to how it looks. I’ll admit I am a fan of red coloured smoothies but this smoothie was nice and refreshing with no strong flavours that stood out against any others.
The fruit bowl was starting to run dry at this point, and the bag of spinach was near its end and starting to look a little sorry for itself so I was a little inventive with this smoothie of pear, apple, spinach and tropical fruit mix. The tropical fruit mix was from a frozen fruit bag which contains mango, pineapple and strawberries. The red berries helped turn the smoothie a pinky red colour which looked a little pale but tasted lovely.
I have learnt a few tips and tricks along the way to help reduce the costs of making smoothies, reduce waste that could happen if your fruit goes off and also to make your smoothie taste nice. My biggest tip centres around a bag of spinach. A bag of spinach is quite large and we can never eat a whole bag before it goes off in the fridge so now I buy a bag and portion off into large handfuls of spinach into a freezer bag and freeze. Now I go to the freezer when I am making a smoothie and my portioned spinach is ready to use.
My next tip is to add a handful of frozen fruit to your smoothie as it cools the finished smoothie down without you having to leave in the fridge for an hour or so before drinking.
I’ve been trying out some different yoghurts in the last few days, and I was wondering what my smoothie would taste like if I added yoghurt to it. This particular smoothie recipe contained an apple, handful of spinach, four tablespoons of rhubarb yoghurt and a handful of frozen red berry mix. I topped with water as well to loosen the smoothie slightly.
I was a little apprehensive about tasting this smoothie but actually it is really nice and I will definitely be using yoghurt in my smoothies a lot more in the future.
